Last month, on the 10th of January, the 80th Golden Globe Awards took place. Last year’s scandal prevented the program from returning to our screens for a while; the Hollywood Foreign Press Association received complaints regarding a lack of diversity in its voting membership, as it did not include any Black members.
At the ceremony, this year’s host and the U.S. comedian Jerrod Carmichael reminded the audience of the issue: „I’m here ‘cause I’m Black. I took this job assuming they hadn’t changed at all. Regardless of whatever the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s past may be, this is an evening where we get to celebrate. And I think this industry deserves evenings like these. And I’m happy to be here”. We were also happy to have a chance to watch the nominated TV shows, films, directors, and actors taking their awards home – or not.
So, what is the Golden Globe?
Golden Globe is one of the most famous awards given annually to those whose performances or contributions to the film and television industry outshine the others. Led by the HFPA, the previously mentioned Hollywood Foreign Press Association, it is considered the second most important award show after the Academy and Emmy Awards. The award ceremony takes place in January every year, when the season of major entertainment industry awards starts.
This year’s ceremony…
Among the celebrities who attended the ceremony, we could spot many A-listers such as Viola Davis, Rihanna, Salma Hayek, Michelle Yeoh, Jenna Ortega, or Colin Farell. The stars shone on the gray carpet, revealing a variety of stunning outfits for the viewers to judge, as usual.
This year, „The Banshees of Inisherin” was the leading winner in most of the categories. Nominated in eight categories, this film won three major Golden Globe prizes, which are: „Best Film, Musical or Comedy,” „Best Screenplay,” and „Best Actor, Musical or Comedy”. The other film nominated by the HFPA in five categories, „The Fabelmans,” won the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama,” and its director, Steven Spielberg, won the award for „Best Director – Motion Picture”.
And the Golden Globe goes to…
One of the popular mainstream actors, Austin Butler, stole the spotlight with his „Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama” win for portraying Elvis Presley in „Elvis”. For the fans of the Marvel universe, you will be happy to hear that Angela Bassett’s performance in „Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was recognised as „Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture”. If anyone is familiar with „Euphoria”, a popular HBO TV series that will soon begin filming its third season, Zendaya won “Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama.” We hope that makes you want to tune in for the new season!
Despite many controversies surrounding the Golden Globes over the last years, the popular award show has proven to successfully achieve its role to provide entertainment and excellent content for both the public and film critics. We are extremely excited to see the next nominees for the Golden Globes Awards in 2024!
